ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Peggy's art is an ongoing series inspired by the elegance and beauty of Japanese symbols and calligraphy. With an emphasis on the spontaneous quality of Japanese brushwork and the rich blackness of the ink, she creates a surface that is rich and deep with memorable collage materials. Peggy Huff has developed her paintings over the past decade with reflections on her many trips to Japan while visiting her son and wife, who have lived and worked as ceramic artists for the past twelve years near the city of Tokoname.

Peggy is a graduate in painting and sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute and has exhibited her work throughout California and in group shows in Japan. She has been an artist-in-residence in San Francisco Public Schools and has worked as an assistant teacher at the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland.

Since 1985, Peggy has maintained a studio at Hunters point Shipyard. As a board member of the nonprofit Shipyard Trust for the Arts (STAR), she is treasurer of the board and chair of the Artist-in-Residence committee, which offers studio space to local resident of the Bayview/Hunters Point community.

INSPIRATION

My son and his wife have lived and worked as ceramic artists in Japan for eight years. My trips there, my relationship to the country and to them have given me a trunk load of ideas and collage materials.

The use of calligraphy and Japanese characters evolve from my attraction to the spontaneous quality of the Japanese brush and the blackness of the ink. The process I generally use is to repeat the building of layer upon layer of paint and collage materials. The images accumulated have derived from Japanese symbols on items such as packaging, newspapers, stamps, menus, etc. I have stacks and boxes of collage material scattered near my work area where I pick and choose what will work in each piece, like a cook with a mis-en-place of ingredients when preparing a dish. My personal style of calligraphy might be combined with images of a fan or a set of Japanese stamps on a field of color or on geometric objects like card shapes and dice. This moves into the real imagery of my work and that is of chance, luck and game. The surface becomes rich and deep with memorable collage materials that evoke emotion and time.
